About the Split Rock River
The Split Rock River starts in a place called Split Rock Lake. This lake is in eastern Aitkin County. From there, the river flows east. It then enters Carlton County.
Where it Flows
The river keeps flowing until it reaches the Kettle River. This meeting point is about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) south of a city also named Kettle River. So, it's like a smaller stream joining a bigger one!
Why the Name?
The Split Rock River got its name because of its banks. The sides of the river are very steep and rocky. Imagine big rocks that look like they've been split apart – that's where the name comes from!
