Splunge is a small, unincorporated community in Monroe County, Mississippi. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. It's also known by the names Lannsdale or Lanndale.
Splunge is located right on Splunge Creek. You can find it east of Hatley and north of Greenwood Springs.
History of Splunge
Splunge has a long history, even though it's a small place. Back in 1900, only 18 people lived there!
The community once had its own post office. It was called "Splung" from 1848 to 1867. Later, it reopened as "Splunge" from 1881 until 1918.
A very old building in Splunge is the Splunge Free Will Baptist Church. It was built way back in 1844. This church is the oldest church building still standing in Monroe County. It's also the oldest Free Will Baptist church in all of Mississippi.
Another important landmark is the Splunge Lookout Tower. This tower is so special that it's listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. This register keeps track of important fire lookout towers across the country.
Today, the community is protected by two volunteer fire departments. These brave volunteers help keep everyone safe.
In 1973, something exciting happened in Splunge: people discovered natural gas deep underground. This was an important find for the area.
