Sport Goofy in Soccermania is a fun animated TV special from Walt Disney Animation Studios. It first aired on May 27, 1987, on NBC. Before the cartoon, there was a funny fake documentary. It showed Goofy often messing things up. But then, this special showed a new Goofy. He was athletic and a real hero!
This cartoon also introduced some characters from the Donald Duck universe to animation. These characters came from the comics. They include the Beagle Boys, Gyro Gearloose, and Little Helper. Gyro and Little Helper only appeared very briefly.
The Story of Soccermania
The story begins with Huey, Dewey, and Louie. They ask their rich uncle, Scrooge McDuck, for some money. They need $1.49 to buy a trophy for their new soccer team. Scrooge thinks this is a lot of money!
Scrooge gives them an old trophy he thinks is worthless. But the boys meet a museum expert. This expert says the old trophy is actually worth a million dollars! Scrooge wants his valuable trophy back. So, he agrees to sponsor his nephews' soccer team.
The boys buy a soccer ball from a sports store. The store owner is a very athletic and quick Goofy. The nephews' teammates are not very good at soccer. So, Goofy becomes their coach. Under "Sport Goofy's" patient coaching, the team, called the "McDuck Greenbacks," gets much better. They really improve their soccer skills.
News about the trophy's high value spreads. The Beagle Boys hear about it. They decide to join the soccer tournament too. They want to win the trophy. But they are not in shape and don't know soccer. So, they plan to cheat.
The cartoon shows quick clips of the tournament. The McDuck Greenbacks make it to the semifinals. The Beagles see this and think Goofy is a problem. They decide to kidnap him. The team feels sad without their coach. But they decide to keep playing without him.
The Greenbacks play very well. But the Beagle Boys keep cheating. The referee is nearsighted (can't see well). He keeps saying the Beagles' goals are fair. The first half ends with a score of 10–0 for the Beagles.
Goofy quietly escapes from the Beagles' hideout. He gets to the field for the second half. This makes the Greenbacks play amazingly! Even the Beagles' cheating can't stop them. The Greenbacks make a huge comeback. The score becomes 10–10.
The angry Beagles start attacking Goofy. Scrooge finally makes the referee wear his glasses. The referee sees the cheating! He calls a foul and sets up a penalty shot. Only Goofy and the Beagles' goalie are left on the field. Goofy is still dizzy from the beating. He tries to get his balance back.
The Beagles' captain secretly puts a bomb in the soccer ball. He tells one Beagle to push the red button when Goofy shoots. But this Beagle isn't very smart. He keeps pushing the green button instead! Sport Goofy easily scores the penalty goal. The overconfident goalie can't stop him. The Greenbacks win 11–10!
Everyone in Duckburg celebrates, except the Beagles. Their angry captain pushes the red button. The ball explodes! All the Beagle Boys are sent flying into a waiting police van. Scrooge gets his valuable trophy back. He donates it to the Duckburg Museum. He makes sure it helps with his taxes! Then, he joins the McDuck Greenbacks for their championship photo.

Making the Cartoon
This cartoon was the first new Goofy cartoon made since 1965. Disney announced the short in 1985. They also announced another film called The Prince and the Pauper.
Soccermania was also the first time Russi Taylor voiced Huey, Dewey, and Louie. She took over the role from Clarence Nash. She also started voicing Grandma Duck, taking over from June Foray. In this cartoon, Will Ryan voiced Uncle Scrooge. Usually, Alan Young voiced Scrooge.
Sport Goofy in Soccermania was the last Disney project for Darrell Van Citters. He later started his own animation company. Joe Ranft and Tad Stones wrote the story. Joe Ranft later worked for Pixar. Tad Stones worked for Disney Television Animation. He worked on DuckTales, another show with Uncle Scrooge and his nephews. This cartoon was also one of the first Disney projects for Kevin Lima. He later directed A Goofy Movie. During a dream scene, you can see parts of an older 1946 Goofy cartoon called Double Dribble.
