Glenn Michael Lockett (born July 1, 1951 – died March 4, 2023) was an American music producer. He was best known by his nickname, Spot. Spot was the main producer and engineer for SST Records. This was a very important independent record label for punk rock music. He wrote his name as SPʘT, using a special dot inside the 'O'.

Early Life

Glenn Michael Lockett was born in Los Angeles, California. He was born on July 1, 1951. He grew up in Hollywood with his older sister, Cynthia. His father, Claybourne, was a fighter pilot in WW II. He was part of the Tuskegee Airmen, an all-Black group of pilots.

In the mid-1970s, Lockett moved to Hermosa Beach, California. There, he met Greg Ginn while working at a restaurant. Lockett also wrote record reviews for a newspaper called Easy Reader. He used the name Spot for his reviews. Spot was briefly a bass player for a band called Panic. This band later became the famous group Black Flag.

Music Career

Spot recorded, mixed, and produced many important albums for SST Records. He worked there between 1979 and 1986. He helped create music for many famous bands. These included Black Flag, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Hüsker Dü, and Descendents. After leaving SST in 1986, Spot moved to Austin, Texas.

Spot was also a talented photographer. He published a book of his photos called Sounds of Two Eyes Opening. In 2018, his photographs were shown in a gallery in Hermosa Beach.

Later Life and Death

Spot passed away on March 4, 2023. He was in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, recovering from a stroke. He had been ill since late 2021 with a lung condition called fibrosis. He was waiting for a lung transplant before his stroke.
