The spotted bamboowren (Psilorhamphus guttatus) is a small, unique bird. It belongs to the tapaculo family called Rhinocryptidae. These birds are often shy and hard to spot. The spotted bamboowren is the only species in its special group, or genus, named Psilorhamphus. You can find this bird living in the forests of southeastern Brazil and far northeastern Argentina. It might also live in Paraguay.

How Scientists Classify the Spotted Bamboowren

Scientists group living things to understand them better. This is called taxonomy. The spotted bamboowren is the only bird in its genus, Psilorhamphus. It does not have any subspecies, meaning there are no different types of this bird.

For a long time, scientists were not sure which bird family the spotted bamboowren belonged to. They thought it might be related to antthrushes, warblers, or wrens. But after studying its body and then its genetics, they are now sure it belongs to the tapaculo family.

The spotted bamboowren is most closely related to the rusty-belted tapaculo. This shows how important genetic studies are in understanding bird families.

What Does the Spotted Bamboowren Look Like?

The spotted bamboowren is about 13.5 centimeters (5.3 inches) long. That's about the length of a pen. Males usually weigh between 10.5 and 13 grams (0.37 to 0.46 ounces). One female bird weighed about 11.5 grams (0.41 ounces).

Adult male birds have a gray head and upper back. Their lower back is a brownish color. Their throat and upper chest are whitish or light brown. This color changes to a buff (pale yellowish-brown) on their lower chest and belly. Their back, wings, and belly have small spots. These spots can be white, brown, or black.

Adult female birds look similar to males. However, the top of their head and upper back are brown instead of gray. Their upper chest is also more buffy.

Where the Spotted Bamboowren Lives

The spotted bamboowren lives only in the Atlantic Forest biome. This special forest stretches across parts of Brazil and Argentina. Its home range goes from southeastern Minas Gerais and western Espírito Santo in Brazil. It continues south through Rio Grande do Sul and into Argentina's northern Misiones Province.

Some people think it might also live in southeastern Paraguay. However, bird experts have not officially confirmed this yet.

As its name suggests, this bird loves bamboo. You will usually find it in bamboo patches, especially at the edge of thick forests. It also likes tangled vines and other dense plants. In the northern parts of its range, it lives at elevations from 600 to 1000 meters (2,000 to 3,300 feet) high. In the south, it can be found from 300 meters (980 feet) up.

How the Spotted Bamboowren Finds Food

The spotted bamboowren usually looks for food about 2 meters (6.6 feet) above the ground. It searches in bamboo plants and on branches. Sometimes, it will go higher, up to 7 meters (23 feet), in thick vine tangles.

Occasionally, this bird will even look for food on the ground. Its main diet consists of insects and their larvae. This means it helps control insect populations in its habitat.

What Does the Spotted Bamboowren Sound Like?

The song of the spotted bamboowren is quite unique. It is described as "wood-wood-wood." The bird repeats this sound for up to 20 seconds. As it sings, the pitch and volume of its song can change. You can listen to its song online here.

Conservation Status: Is the Spotted Bamboowren Safe?

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has assessed the spotted bamboowren. They have listed it as a species of "least concern." This means it is not currently considered to be in danger of extinction.

However, its home is only in the southern Atlantic Forest. This forest has been greatly reduced over time. Many areas have been cleared for farming and human settlements. The exact number of spotted bamboowrens is unknown. But scientists believe its population is slowly decreasing.

Even with these challenges, the bird does live in a few protected areas. These areas help keep its habitat safe.
