The spotted kelpfish (Gibbonsia elegans) is a small, colorful fish that lives in the ocean. You can find it in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, from central California, U.S., all the way down to southern Baja California, Mexico. This fish loves to live in rocky areas underwater where there's lots of seaweed. It can live as deep as about 56 meters (184 feet).

The spotted kelpfish can grow up to 16 centimeters (about 6 inches) long. It eats small creatures like tiny crabs, snails, and worms that live on the ocean floor. The name Gibbonsia comes from William P. Gibbons, a scientist who studied nature. One cool thing about these fish is that they can change their color to match their surroundings!

What Does the Spotted Kelpfish Look Like?

The spotted kelpfish is a very colorful fish with a slim body. It usually grows to about 12 centimeters (almost 5 inches) long.

These fish come in different colors, mainly red, brown, or green. This helps them blend in with their home. Both male and female spotted kelpfish can be these colors.

However, males and females do have some differences. Females tend to grow longer than males. Also, their bellies are different colors: females have yellow or tan bellies, while males and young females have white bellies.

Where Do Spotted Kelpfish Live?

Spotted kelpfish live in shallow ocean waters, especially off the coast of Southern California. They like rocky areas that are covered in plants, like red or brown algae, or green surfgrass.

These fish are amazing at blending in! They come in colors that match the plants they live among. So, you might find red, green, or brown kelpfish depending on their habitat.

They can even change their color over several weeks to match a new home. This color change depends only on the color of the plants around them, not on what they eat.

The time of year also affects their color. In winter, more red kelpfish are found because red algae are common then. In spring and summer, green and brown kelpfish are more common.

Male and female spotted kelpfish often live at different depths. Females are usually found in shallower waters, while males tend to live in deeper areas.

What Do Spotted Kelpfish Eat?

Spotted kelpfish mainly eat small crustaceans that live on plants. These tiny creatures live on the same brown and red algae that the kelpfish call home. The crustaceans also often match the color of their plant habitat.

Their diet includes larger crustaceans, like certain kinds of hump-backed shrimp. Studies have shown that these shrimp make up a big part of the spotted kelpfish's diet. They also eat small worms and tiny snails.

Other Kelpfish Species

The giant kelpfish (Heterostichus rostratus) is another fish that looks a lot like the spotted kelpfish. It also belongs to the Clinidae family.

You can find the giant kelpfish in similar areas of Southern California. It also comes in brown, green, and red colors, just like the spotted kelpfish.

However, the giant kelpfish is much bigger! It can grow up to 61 centimeters (about 2 feet) long. That's about four times longer than the spotted kelpfish!
