Srbijanka Turajlić (born April 25, 1946 – died September 25, 2022) was an important Serbian professor and someone who worked hard to make changes in society. She taught at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
From 2001 to 2004, Srbijanka Turajlić served as an Assistant Minister. She helped lead the higher education part of the Ministry of Education and Sports in Serbia. This was during the time when Zoran Đinđić and Zoran Živković were prime ministers.
In 2017, she helped start a group called the Movement of Free Citizens. This group was led by Saša Janković.
Her Early Life and Education
Srbijanka Turajlić grew up and went to school in Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia. When she was in her last year of high school, she was part of the Yugoslav national team. She even competed in a big math competition called the International Mathematical Olympiad in Moscow in 1964.
She went on to study at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade. She earned her first degree in 1969. Later, she continued her studies and received her master's degree in 1973. She then completed her doctorate degree in 1979. During her time as a student, she won several awards for her excellent work.
From 1974 to 1975, she received a special scholarship from the French government. This allowed her to study in Grenoble, France. In 1982, she became an Assistant Professor, and by 1989, she was an Associate Professor. She also taught in Monterey, California, from 1984 to 1986. She retired from the University of Belgrade in 2011.
In 2017, Srbijanka Turajlić signed something called the Declaration on the Common Language. This was a statement about the language spoken by people in different countries like Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, and Montenegro.
Her daughter, Mila Turajlić, is a filmmaker. Mila made a documentary film about her mother called The Other Side Of Everything. This film won awards.
Srbijanka Turajlić passed away in Belgrade on September 25, 2022. She was 76 years old.
Making a Difference: Her Public Service
Srbijanka Turajlić was very active in a group called Otpor! in the 1990s. This group worked for democracy and change in Serbia.
In 2009, she received the Osvajanje slobode Award. This award is given to people who help bring democracy to Serbia. She was also named one of the "100 Most Powerful Women in Serbia" by a newspaper called Blic.
As mentioned earlier, she worked as an Assistant Minister of Higher Education. This was at the Ministry of Education and Sports from 2001 to 2004. She worked under Minister Gašo Knežević.
In 2017, Srbijanka Turajlić was one of the people who helped create the Movement of Free Citizens. This political group was led by Saša Janković.
