The St. Anthony Park Branch Library is a special part of the Saint Paul Public Library system in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It's a historic building known as a Carnegie library, built way back in 1917. Because of its history, it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important landmark.
In 1999, a cool round addition called a rotunda was built onto the back of the library. This new section is home to the library's huge collection of children's books, which is one of the biggest in all of Saint Paul!
About the Library
Even though the St. Anthony Park Branch Library is one of the smaller libraries in Saint Paul, it's super busy! In 2005, people checked out over 265,000 items from this library. This made it the third-busiest library branch in the whole city. That same year, the library had more than 55,000 items in its collection for everyone to enjoy. You can visit the library 44 hours a week, from Monday to Saturday.
Who Uses the Library?
The library is a beloved spot in the Saint Anthony Park neighborhood. Many people from the area use it often. Students and teachers from the nearby University of Minnesota's St. Paul Campus and Luther Seminary also visit. Plus, students from two nearby public schools come here to learn and read.
Interestingly, about one-third of the library's users come from outside the immediate neighborhood. Some come from Minneapolis and others from suburban Ramsey County.
Special Collections
The St. Anthony Park Branch Library has a unique collection of books. Many graduate students and their families from Asia attend the University of Minnesota. To help them, the library has the city's main collection of books and materials in Chinese and Korean language. This makes it a great resource for many different people!
Community Connections
The St. Anthony Park Branch Library is special because it has its own community group. This group is called the St. Anthony Park Library Association (SAPLA). They work to support the library, in addition to the larger Friends of the St. Paul Public Library group.
The annual St. Anthony Park Arts Festival is a big event that started right on the library's front lawn! Now, the festival has grown so much that it spreads out for more than a block. During the festival, which happens on the first Saturday in June, the library holds a very large used book sale. It's a fun way for the community to support the library and find new books.
