St. Francis Hospital and Heart Center, often called St. Francis Hospital, is a large hospital in Flower Hill, New York. It has 449 beds and is a special kind of hospital called a non-profit teaching hospital. This means it doesn't make money for owners, and it helps train new doctors. St. Francis Hospital is the only hospital in New York State that focuses only on heart care.

The hospital works with the New York Institute of Technology to help medical students learn by working with real patients. St. Francis Hospital is known across the country for its excellent care. The U.S. News & World Report has ranked it as one of the best hospitals for heart surgery, stomach and gut problems, care for older people, brain and nerve issues, and bone and joint surgery. It is also ranked as one of the top hospitals in both New York State and the New York City area.

How St. Francis Hospital Started

St. Francis Hospital began in 1922 thanks to a kind couple, Carlos and Mabel Munson. Carlos Munson was a rich man from Flower Hill, New York whose family owned a shipping company. They gave 15 acres of their land to a group of nuns called the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.

The nuns first used the land to open a place for poor and sick children from New York City. Many children in the 1930s suffered from heart problems, especially a condition called rheumatic heart disease. These children needed special care that their families couldn't always afford.

From Camp to Heart Hospital

Because so many children needed help, the camp was changed into a special hospital just for children with heart problems. It was called a "sanatorium." By 1941, St. Francis Hospital had 125 beds and cared for children aged 6 to 16. Children often stayed for about eight months to get better.

Over time, the hospital grew. In 1954, it started caring for adult patients too. By 1973, it had grown to 227 beds and 5 operating rooms, showing how much it had expanded to help more people.

Helping in Emergencies

St. Francis Hospital has also played a role in big emergencies. For example, after Avianca Flight 52 crashed in 1990, St. Francis Hospital was one of the hospitals that helped care for the people who were hurt.

In 2012, the hospital updated its emergency room. They made it bigger and more energy-efficient, so it could help even more people quickly and efficiently.
