This chapel, and the rest of the Mordecai property, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites. Today, the chapel is a very popular spot for weddings.
The Chapel's Journey Through Time
St. Mark's Chapel was built a long time ago, in 1847. It was built by skilled carpenters on a large farm, or plantation, in Chatham County, North Carolina. This farm belonged to a person named John Haughton.
The chapel was first used by the Episcopal Church. In 1953, the chapel was moved to Siler City. There, it was used by a different church group.
Later, in 1979, the chapel found its new home. It was moved to Mordecai Historic Park in Raleigh. Today, St. Mark's Chapel is still very active. People use it for weddings, meetings, and educational talks.
