The St. Maron's Cathedral, also known as St Maroun’s Cathedral, is a special church in Redfern, Sydney, Australia. It belongs to the Maronite rite, which is a part of the Eastern Catholic Church. This church is called a cathedral because it is the main church for a specific area.
About St. Maron's Cathedral
This cathedral is the most important church for the Maronite Catholic Eparchy of Saint Maron of Sydney. An "eparchy" is like a diocese, which is a church district led by a bishop. This eparchy was created in 1973 by Pope Paul VI. The Pope is the leader of the Catholic Church.
The cathedral is where the current bishop, Antoine-Charbel Tarabay, has his official seat. This means it is the main church where he leads services and makes important decisions. Church services at St. Maron's Cathedral are held in both English and Arabic.
History of the Cathedral
The building started as a regular church around 1896. It was founded by Fathers Yazbeck and Dahdah. It was officially dedicated on January 10, 1897. Later, in 1973, it became a cathedral. This happened when Archbishop Abdo Khalife was in charge. A cathedral is a very important church, often larger and more grand than a regular church. It serves as the central church for a bishop's area.
