History of St. Mary

The area where St. Mary is now was first settled around c. 1785 by the Hardin family. It was called Hardin's Creek back then. In 1790, Catholic settlers arrived from Maryland. They named their community Saint Charles after their old home and their new church.

The first Catholic settlers in Hardin's Creek were the brothers Edward and Charles Beaven in 1786. They were followed by the brothers Mathew, Zachariah, Sylvester, and Jeremiah Cissell.

St. Mary was the hometown of George Elder. He and William Byrne later founded Saint Mary's College in 1821. The post office opened in 1858 and was named Saint Mary's after the school. The city officially became St. Mary on May 26, 1865. The college closed in 1976.
