St. Mary is a small city in Marion County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is known as a "home rule-class city," which means it has the power to manage its own local affairs. In 2020, about 138 people lived there.
History of St. Mary
The area where St. Mary is now was first settled around c. 1785 by the Hardin family. It was called Hardin's Creek back then. In 1790, Catholic settlers arrived from Maryland. They named their community Saint Charles after their old home and their new church.
The first Catholic settlers in Hardin's Creek were the brothers Edward and Charles Beaven in 1786. They were followed by the brothers Mathew, Zachariah, Sylvester, and Jeremiah Cissell.
St. Mary was the hometown of George Elder. He and William Byrne later founded Saint Mary's College in 1821. The post office opened in 1858 and was named Saint Mary's after the school. The city officially became St. Mary on May 26, 1865. The college closed in 1976.
The city has historical markers that honor the Sisters of Loretto and St. Mary's College.

St. Mary is located on Kentucky Route 84. It is about 5 miles west of Lebanon. The exact location is 37°50′56.6″N 85°20′46.7″W / 37.849056°N 85.346306°W.

Economy and Jobs
Since 1980, St. Mary has been home to the Marion Adjustment Center. This facility provides jobs for many people in the area. In June 2013, the state decided not to continue its contract with the center. At that time, the center employed 166 people.
