The St. Marys Historic District is a special area in St. Marys, Georgia. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 13, 1976. This means it's recognized as an important place in American history. The city of St. Marys was first settled a very long time ago, in the mid-1500s, by people from Spain.

Exploring the St. Marys Historic District
The St. Marys Historic District covers a large area. It is bordered by Waterfront Road, Norris Street, Alexander Street, and Oak Grove Cemetery. This district includes parts of the original town from the 1700s.
You can find many old buildings here. These include homes, shops, and churches. They were built between the late 1700s and the early 1900s.
What Makes This Area Special?
There are many interesting things to see in the historic district.
- The waterfront area is a beautiful spot by the water.
- The early cemetery is a quiet place with old gravestones.
- You can also find a special bell. It was made by Paul and Joseph Warren Revere. They were the sons of the famous American hero, Paul Revere.
- There is a memorial oak tree. It was planted on the day George Washington was buried.
History of St. Marys
The city of St. Marys was officially created by the state government on December 5, 1792. It became an incorporated city in November 1802. For many years, from 1869 to 1923, St. Marys was the main government center for Camden County, Georgia.
Important Buildings and Churches
One important building in the district is Orange Hall. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places by itself.
The St. Marys United Methodist Church was started in 1799. It is considered a very important church. Many people even call it the "father" of all Methodist Churches in Florida.
