History of St. Marys Station

Why Was the Station Built?

The St. Marys station opened in 1907. It was built by the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR). The main goal was to make it easy for people to get to the town center of St. Marys.

When the Grand Trunk Railway was first built in 1858, St. Marys only had one station. This was the St. Marys Junction station. It was about 1.5 kilometers north of where the current station is. This area was not developed, so it was far from the town.

Moving Closer to Town

People in St. Marys wanted a station closer to where they lived and worked. So, in 1879, the GTR opened the St. Marys Town station. This station was about 400 meters south of the current station. It was located where the railway crosses James Street South.

However, residents still felt this location was not convenient enough. Because of this, the GTR decided to build the current St. Marys station in 1907. This new station replaced the St. Marys Town station.

Saving the Station

In the 1980s, the Town of St. Marys bought the station. They did this to make sure it would not be closed down or torn apart. The town then worked to fix up and restore the station building. The newly restored station officially reopened on September 26, 1988.

What's Inside St. Marys Station?

The St. Marys station has a single platform next to a single track for trains. The Town of St. Marys owns and takes care of the station building.

Inside the station, you can find places to buy tickets and a waiting area for passengers. The building also has the St. Marys Station Gallery. This gallery is a place where art is shown.
