St. Michael Indian School (SMIS) is a private Catholic day school. This means students attend classes during the day and go home afterward. It is part of Saint Michael Parish, which belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gallup in New Mexico. The school is located in the Navajo Nation at the St. Michaels chapter in Arizona.
School History
St. Michael School was started in 1902. It was founded by a special person named Saint Katharine Drexel. She was a nun from the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Building the school campus began soon after it was founded.
Student Community
Most of the students at SMIS are members of the Navajo Nation. About 97% of the students are from the Navajo community. The other 3% are from different backgrounds.
School Campus
The school campus has several important buildings:
- The Saint Michael Elementary School building is the oldest. It has been there since the school first opened.
- The Saint Michael High School building was built in 1946. This is where the older students attend classes.
- The Saint Michael Chapel is used every week. Students gather there for Catholic Mass.
