St. Rose (of Lima) Church, also known as St. Rosa Church, is a Catholic church in Cincinnati, Ohio. It's located in the East End neighborhood, right by the Ohio River. Because it's so close to the river, the church has survived many floods. You can even see a special mark on the back of the church that shows how high the water got during one flood!
History of St. Rosa Church
The St. Rosa Church community started on January 15, 1867. The church was named after St. Rose of Lima. She was the very first saint from the Americas. Many of the first members of this church were German people. They came from two other churches nearby: Saint Philomena and St. Francis de Sales.
Building the Church
The church building was put up in 1867. The first stone, called the cornerstone, was placed on October 6, 1867. The church officially opened on May 21, 1869.
The building is made of brick with stone decorations. It is built in the Roman style. The church is about 57 feet wide and 127 feet long. Its tall steeple is over 190 feet high. This steeple is a famous landmark you can see from the Ohio River. The whole project, including the land, cost more than $60,000 back then.
Fire and Rebuilding
On January 31, 1894, a big fire almost completely destroyed the church and its school. Only the strong outer walls were left standing. But the community didn't give up!
The church was rebuilt for $30,000. Every single dollar was donated by people who wanted to see their church rise again. By 1896, about 200 families were part of the church community. St. Rosa Church is still an active church today.
