St. Rose Church, also known as St. Rosa Church, is a Catholic church. It is located in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the East End neighborhood. You can find it at 2501 Riverside Drive, which used to be called Eastern Avenue.
The church is very close to the Ohio River. Because of this, it has survived many floods over the years. There's even a special mark painted on the back of the church. This mark shows how high the floodwaters reached in the past!
A Look Back: History of St. Rose Church
The community that built St. Rose Church started on January 15, 1867. The church was named after St. Rose of Lima. She was the very first saint from the Americas. This new church community was formed from parts of two older churches: Saint Philomena and St. Francis de Sales. Most of the people in the first congregation were German.
Building the Church
The church building itself was constructed in 1867. The first stone, called the cornerstone, was placed on October 6, 1867. The church was officially opened and dedicated on May 21, 1869.
The building is made of brick with stone decorations. It was built in the Roman style of architecture. The church measures about 57 feet wide and 127 feet long. Its tall steeple reaches over 190 feet high. This steeple is a well-known landmark along the Ohio River. Building the church and buying the land cost more than $60,000 back then.
Fire and Rebuilding
On January 31, 1894, a big fire almost completely destroyed the church and its school. Only the strong outer walls were left standing. But the community did not give up! They rebuilt the church for $30,000. Every single dollar needed for the rebuilding was donated by people. By 1896, the church community had grown to 200 families.
Today, the St. Rose Church community is still active and strong.
