St Albans Museum + Gallery: A Journey Through Time
The St Albans Museum + Gallery shows off the history and art of St Albans. You can explore different rooms filled with interesting displays. The exhibitions often change, so there's always something new to see. This museum has hosted big national shows and smaller local ones. Sometimes, it even features art exhibitions put together by the University of Hertfordshire, as they work together.
The Museum's History and New Home
The museum first opened in 1898 as the Hertfordshire County Museum. Its old building on Hatfield Road closed in September 2015. This was part of a plan to turn the Old Town Hall into a new museum and gallery. The old building had many amazing items from after the Roman times. These included Saxon brooches, old coins, and carved stone pieces.
Even though the new building has more space, some items from the old museum are now in storage. However, new and exciting exhibits are planned to be shown soon. The new Museum + Gallery opened in 2018. It is located in the old town hall, which is a very old and important building in St Albans city centre.
Verulamium Museum: Discovering Roman Life
The Verulamium Museum is located where the main public square, or forum, of the ancient Roman city of Verulamium once stood. It is right next to Verulamium Park. This museum focuses on the Iron Age and Roman history of St Albans. The later history of the area is shown at the St Albans Museum + Gallery.
How the Museum Began
The Verulamium Museum was created after important digs in the 1930s. These excavations were led by Mortimer Wheeler and his wife, Tessa Wheeler. They were both famous archaeologists. The museum was made bigger in 1996 and 1997. During this building work, more digging happened on the site.
