History of the Church
A Look Back in Time
St Andrew's Church is very old, with its first parts built in the 1200s. Over the years, new sections were added in the 1300s, 1400s, and 1600s. A porch was built in 1792, and the church was fixed up in 1844. The tower and a small room called a vestry were added in 1874.
Special Carvings and Memorials
Inside the church, you can find special carved wooden ends on the benches. These carvings are from the 1300s and were originally from Dale Abbey, another historic place.
The church also has memorials for the Pole and de la Pole families. These are like special plaques or statues that remember people who have passed away. One memorial is for German Pole, who was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Derbyshire in 1656. An MP is a person chosen to represent a group of people in government. This memorial was made in 1684 and is thought to be the work of a famous carver named Grinling Gibbons.
The Church Organ
The organ at St Andrew's Church was built in 1888 by a company called Peter Conacher. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register, which is a list of organs across the country.
