St. Barnabas’ Church is a Church of England church located in Lenton Abbey, a part of Nottingham, England. It serves the local community and is dedicated to St. Barnabas.
History of St. Barnabas' Church
St. Barnabas’ Church was built because the people living in the new Lenton Abbey housing area wanted a church close to their homes. A well-known architect named Thomas Cecil Howitt designed the building.
When construction began, a special box was placed under the first stone laid. This box was like a time capsule! It contained coins, copies of the church's building plans, and newspapers from Nottingham at that time.
The church was officially opened and blessed on July 25, 1938. This special ceremony was led by Bishop Henry Mosley from the Diocese of Southwell.
At first, St. Barnabas' was a smaller church connected to Holy Trinity Church, Lenton. However, on July 25, 1955, it became its own independent church parish. This meant it had its own area and responsibilities.
For many years, the person in charge of St. Barnabas' Church also looked after another nearby church. For example, from 1977, the vicar of St. Mary's Church, Wollaton Park was also responsible for St. Barnabas'. Today, the vicar of Lenton is in charge of the parish.
The Church Organ
The church has a large pipe organ with two keyboards, called manuals. This organ was built in 1938 by a company called William Hill & Son & Norman & Beard Ltd.. It's a very old and special instrument! You can find detailed information about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register website.
