St. Barnabas’ Church is a Church of England church located in Lenton Abbey, a part of Nottingham, United Kingdom.
History of St. Barnabas’ Church
St. Barnabas’ Church was built because the first people living in the new Lenton Abbey area wanted a local church. A famous architect named Thomas Cecil Howitt designed it.
When construction began, a special box was placed under the foundation stone. This box held coins, copies of the church plans, and newspapers from Nottingham at that time. It was like a time capsule!
The church was officially opened and blessed by Bishop Henry Mosley of Diocese of Southwell on 25 July 1938. At first, it was a smaller church that helped out Holy Trinity Church, Lenton. But on 25 July 1955, St. Barnabas’ became its own main church for the area, called a parish.
For a while, the vicar (leader) of St. Mary's Church, Wollaton Park also looked after St. Barnabas’. Now, the vicar of Christ Church, Chilwell is in charge of the St. Barnabas’ parish.
The Church Organ
The church has a large pipe organ with two keyboards. It was made in 1938 by a company called William Hill & Son & Norman & Beard Ltd.. You can find details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register website.
