A Look Back in Time
St. Mary's Church was designed by a well-known architect named Thomas Cecil Howitt. The church first opened its doors in 1939.
At first, the church was looked after by helpers from Holy Trinity Church, Lenton. But in 1957, St. Mary's Church became its own official parish church. This meant it had its own leader and could serve its local community directly.
Church Leaders Over the Years
The church has had several leaders, called vicars, who have guided the community. Here are some of them:
- Revd E. Strickland
- Revd Robin Fletcher (around 1963-1973)
- Revd Malcolm Kitchen (around 1973-1988)
- Revd Frank Sudworth
- Revd Henry Curran (2007–2021)
- Revd Robert Brewis (2023-Present)
Special Features of the Church
Inside St. Mary's Church, you can find a special stone basin called a font. This font is used for baptisms, which are ceremonies where people become part of the Christian church. The design of this font is based on a very old one from the 12th century. That original font is now in Holy Trinity Church, Lenton.
The Church Organ
The church has a large musical instrument called an organ. It was built in 1938 by a company named J. W. Walker & Sons Ltd. The organ is split into two parts at the back of the church. The keyboard, where the organist plays, is located near the choir seats on the right side of the main area.
Organ Players
Many talented musicians have played the organ at St. Mary's Church. They help lead the music during services and events. Some of the past organists include:
- Dennis Marriot (1938-1941)
- Mr. Whitehead (1943-1951)
- David Reynolds (1957-1965)
- Peter Price (1968-1974)
