St Bartholomew's Church, Long Benton is a historic Anglican church located in Longbenton, a part of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. It was built in the Gothic Revival style, which means it looks like churches from the Middle Ages.

The Church's Long History

Early Days

The church in Long Benton has a very long history. Records show that rectors (the main priests) have served here since 1150. This means the church has been an important part of the community for over 800 years! In 1310, a special chapel, called a chantry, was created inside the church to honor the Virgin Mary. Later, in 1339 or 1340, Balliol College at Oxford University became responsible for the church, and they still are today.

Rebuilding the Church

By 1790, the church building was in very bad shape. It needed to be completely rebuilt. An architect named William Newton designed the new main part of the church (the nave) and the tower. These parts were built on the old church's foundations. The church was officially opened on November 2, 1791.

The part of the church called the chancel was rebuilt later in 1855. More sections were added over time, like a place for the organ and a south aisle in 1874. A room for the clergy (vestry) was added in 1888.

Modern Additions

In 1980, a new, eight-sided Church Hall was built. This hall is used for many church activities. Later, in 1994, a new chapel, a church office, and a library were added. These new spaces help the church run its many programs and publish its magazine, 'In Touch'.

What Happens at the Church?

Services and Events

St Bartholomew's Church holds services every day. There are Morning and Evening Prayers, and a special service called Eucharist on Wednesdays. On Sundays, there are three services, with the main 'Parish Eucharist' at 10:00 AM. Because the church is so beautiful and traditional inside, it's a very popular place for weddings.

Music and Bells

Music is a big part of the church. The church has a choir with singers of all ages. They practice every week and sing at the main Sunday service. They perform both old and new music and wear traditional robes called cassocks and surplices.

The church has a large organ that was first built in 1874. It was updated in 2014 with a new digital organ. To celebrate 100 years since the church was rebuilt, eight bells were installed. These bells are rung before services and for weddings, creating a beautiful sound.
