History of St Basil's Church
The area around St Basil's Church became its own church district in 1896. This new district was created from parts of two other church areas: Holy Trinity Church, Bordesley and St Andrew's Church, Bordesley.
Building the Church
The church building itself was constructed between 1910 and 1911. A famous architect named Arthur Stansfield Dixon designed it.
Changes Over Time
In 1939, St Basil's Church joined with another church, St John's Church, Deritend. After this, St Basil's Church became the main church for both groups. However, in 1978, St Basil's Church closed its doors. Its church district then joined with St Martin in the Bull Ring, another church in Birmingham.
What is it Now?
Today, the building is no longer used as a church. Instead, it is called the St Basil Centre. This center helps young people in many different ways.
The Church Organ
When the church was built, it received a special pipe organ. This organ was made by a company called Harrison and Harrison in 1911. You can find details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register. When St Basil's Church closed, its organ was moved to Worcester Cathedral.
