Building History
How St Clare's Church Was Built
The Church of St Clare of Assisi was constructed between 1964 and 1965. It was originally part of the larger parish of St Francis of Assisi. The building cost £35,000 to complete.
The church was designed by an architect named Thomas A. Crawford. It officially opened on February 11, 1965. The opening ceremony was led by Bishop Gordon Wheeler, who was the coadjutor Bishop of Middlesbrough at the time.
Changes Over Time
St Clare's Church is quite large. Its design is typical for churches built in the 1960s. After the Second Vatican Council, which was a big meeting for the Catholic Church, the inside of the church was rearranged.
One important change was moving the tabernacle. The tabernacle is a special place where the Blessed Sacrament is kept. It was moved to its own separate chapel within the church.
Parish Life
Becoming Its Own Parish
In 1967, the area around St Clare's Church grew a lot. Many new houses were built, and more people moved into the neighborhood. Because of this, the parish of St Francis of Assisi was divided.
St Clare's Church then became its own separate parish. This meant it had its own community and services.
Returning to St Francis Parish
Later, in 2013, St Clare's Church rejoined the parish of St Francis of Assisi. So, it is now part of that larger parish again. The church holds one Sunday Mass service at 9 AM.
