History of St Clare's Church
Building the Church
The Church of St Clare of Assisi was built between 1964 and 1965. It was designed by an architect named Thomas A. Crawford. The building cost £35,000 at the time.
When it first opened, it was part of the parish of St Francis of Assisi. On February 11, 1965, the church was officially opened. This ceremony was led by Gordon Wheeler, who was a special bishop for the Diocese of Middlesbrough.
Changes Over Time
St Clare's Church is quite large. Its design is typical for churches built in the 1960s. After a big meeting called the Second Vatican Council, some changes were made inside the church.
For example, the tabernacle was moved. The tabernacle is a special place where the Blessed Sacrament is kept. It was moved to its own separate chapel within the church.
Parish Life
Becoming Its Own Parish
In 1967, the area around St Clare's Church grew a lot. Many new houses were built, and more people moved in. Because of this, the original parish of St Francis of Assisi was divided.
St Clare's Church then became its own separate parish. This meant it had its own community and services.
Joining Back with St Francis
Later, in 2013, St Clare's Church became part of the St Francis of Assisi parish again. Even though it's part of a larger parish now, it still holds services.
Currently, there is one Sunday Mass held at the church. It takes place at 9:00 AM.
