The Catholic Church of St Edmund of Canterbury is a Roman Catholic church located in Whitton, London. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster. The church is named after Edmund Rich, also known as Saint Edmund of Canterbury. He was an important Archbishop of Canterbury in the 13th century.
The church community was started by the Edmundite Fathers. They bought land in 1934 and turned existing buildings into a chapel. A new church was built in 1937. However, it was destroyed during the Blitz on October 29, 1940, due to German bombing. The church building you see today was finished in 1963 and officially opened in 1972.
In 1988, the Edmundite Fathers moved back to the United States. Since then, local priests from the diocese have managed the parish.
The Church Building
The current church building was constructed between 1961 and 1963. It replaced the first church that was built in 1935. The famous architect F. X. Velarde designed the building. Richard O'Mahony helped complete the project for the F. X. Velarde Partnership.
Inside the church, there is a special cabinet called an aumbry. It was made by David John and is used to store holy oils.
Church Services
Mass is a religious service held at the church. It takes place every morning. There are also Mass services on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Staying Connected
The church publishes a weekly newsletter. It is called St Edmund's Chronicle. This newsletter shares news and updates with the church community.
