The Catholic Church of St Edmund of Canterbury is a Catholic church located in Whitton, London. It is part of the Diocese of Westminster. The church is named after Edmund Rich, who was an important Archbishop of Canterbury in the 13th century.
This church was started by a group called the Edmundite Fathers. They bought land in 1934 and turned some buildings into a chapel. A new church was built in 1937. Sadly, this first church was destroyed by German bombs during the Blitz in 1940. The church you see today was finished in 1963.
In 1988, the Edmundite Fathers moved back to the United States. Since then, local priests have led the church.
The Church Building
The church building was constructed between 1961 and 1963. It was designed by an architect named F. X. Velarde. Another architect, Richard O'Mahony, helped finish the project.
The church has a special cabinet called an aumbry. This cabinet holds holy oils. It was designed by David John.
