Discovering the Church of St George

A Church with Ancient Roots

The Church of St George has a long history. While it began in the 12th century, much of what you see today was rebuilt later. This happened in the 15th and 16th centuries. Imagine how many changes it has seen over hundreds of years!

Outside the church, there is a very old yew tree. This tree is about 1,000 years old. It stands tall and strong, watching over the church grounds.

The church building itself is decorated with interesting carvings. You can find carved angels. There are also some animal heads that might look a bit scary or "nightmarish." These carvings add to the church's unique and ancient feel.

Special Features Inside

When you step inside the Church of St George, you will find more history. One special item is a 12th-century pillar piscina. A piscina is a stone basin used for washing sacred vessels. This one is very old and shows how the church was used long ago.

There is also a memorial inside the church. It remembers William Temple. He was a very important person, an Archbishop of Canterbury. He used to spend his holidays in Bicknoller village. He visited often between 1933 and 1944.

The Church's Musical Heart and Bells

The church has an organ that was built in 1922. It has a beautiful case made of carved oak wood. The organ was made by a company called the Positive Organ Company.

High up in the church tower are the bells. One of these bells has its own story. It used to be in another church, St Saviour's, in a place called Larkhall, Bath. In 2012, there were plans to add a sixth bell to the tower.

The Church of St George is part of a group of churches. This group is called the Quantock Towers benefice. It is within the larger area known as the Taunton archdeaconry.
