A Look Back: The Church's History
Starting in the 1100s
This church has been around for a very long time! It was first built way back in the year 1100. Part of the church, called the nave, used to be part of a much older building. This older building was a small Augustinian Priory called Gresley Priory. A priory is like a monastery where monks or nuns live and pray.
Repairs and Changes Over Time
Over the centuries, the church needed a lot of work. In 1786, it was in bad shape and had to be fixed up. Later, in 1872, a new part called the chancel was added by an architect named Arthur Blomfield. The chancel is the area near the altar. At this time, all the seats were also changed to face the east.
The church has had to close for repairs more than once. In May 1932, it closed for two years because the ceiling was unsafe. It reopened in July 1934 after being fixed. More recently, in 2018, the church closed again. This was because some parts of the building were falling, and the roof had problems.
The Church Organ
Music in the Church
The church has a beautiful pipe organ that makes music during services. It was first put in place in 1860 by a company called Forster and Andrews.
Upgrades to the Organ
Over the years, the organ has been updated several times. It was changed by S Taylor in 1888 and by H Cantrill in 1960. The most recent updates were done by Henry Groves & Son in 2000. You can find out more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
