History of the Church
Early Beginnings
The church building is very old. It dates back to the year 1100. Part of the church used to be a small monastery. This monastery was called Gresley Priory. Monasteries were places where monks lived and prayed.
Restorations and Changes
Over time, the church fell into disrepair. It was in a bad state. So, it was repaired and made new again in 1786.
More changes happened later. In 1872, a new part called a chancel was added. This work was done by an architect named Arthur Blomfield. The chancel is the area around the altar. At this time, all the seats were turned to face the east.
Recent Closures and Repairs
The church has faced some challenges. In May 1932, it had to close for two years. This was because the ceiling was in a dangerous condition. After repairs, it opened again in July 1934.
More recently, the church closed again in 2018. This time, it was due to falling pieces of stone. There were also problems with the roof. As of August 2025, the church remains closed. It is waiting for more repairs to make it safe.
The Church Organ
The church has a special musical instrument. It is a large pipe organ. This organ was first put into the church in 1860. The company that installed it was Forster and Andrews.
Over the years, the organ has been updated. It was changed by S Taylor in 1888. H Cantrill worked on it in 1960. Later, Henry Groves & Son made more updates in 2000. You can find details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
