The Church's Long History

How Old Is It?

St Giles’ Church is very old! It was first built way back in the 11th century. That means it's over 900 years old. Imagine all the history it has seen!

Changes Over Time

Over the centuries, the church has changed and grown. Around the year 1342, a part called the chancel was added. The chancel is the area near the altar where the clergy sit.

The church also had big updates in 1855 and 1866. More work happened in 1883. During this time, new wooden seats called pews were put in. A new organ was also installed. New bells were added to the tower, and gas chandeliers were put up to light the church.

The floor was covered with special patterned tiles called Minton encaustic tiles. The old plaster was removed from the walls, showing the stone underneath.

The Church Organ

The church has a pipe organ that was built in 1977. A person named Nigel Church created it. He worked with David Butterworth to design it. This organ helps make beautiful music for church services.
