St Giles’ Church in Sandiacre, Derbyshire, is a very old and important building. It is a parish church that belongs to the Church of England. This church is so special that it has a "Grade I listed" status. This means it is considered one of the most important historic buildings in England.
History of the Church
The church building is very ancient, dating back to the 11th century, which means it was first built in the 1000s. Imagine how many people have visited it over hundreds of years!
Building Changes Over Time
A part of the church called the chancel was added around the year 1342. This shows how churches often grow and change over many centuries.
The church has been repaired and updated several times. Major restoration work happened in 1855 and again in 1866. This helped keep the old building strong and beautiful.
More improvements were made in 1883. During this time, new seats, called pews, were put in for people to sit on. A new organ was also installed, and new bells were added to the church tower. They even put in gas chandeliers, which were fancy lights for that time.
The floor was also updated with special tiles called Minton encaustic tiles. These tiles often have colorful patterns. The plaster was removed from the walls, showing the original stone underneath.
The Church Organ
St Giles’ Church has a special musical instrument called a pipe organ. This organ was built in 1977 by a person named Nigel Church. He worked with David Butterworth to create it. Pipe organs are very large and can make many different sounds, filling the church with music.
