The Church of St. James is a special church located in Seacroft, a part of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It's an active Anglican church, which means it's part of the Church of England. It's also a parish church, serving the local community. This church is considered important enough to be a Grade II listed building, which helps protect its history and unique design.
A Look Back: When Was It Built?
St. James' Church was built a long time ago, between 1845 and 1846. That's almost 180 years ago! Later, in 1988, some new parts were added to the church to make it even better for people using it today.
What Does It Look Like?
The church is built in a style called Gothic Revival. This means it looks like older Gothic churches, but it was built more recently. The architect, T Hellyer, designed it using strong, cut stone and a roof made of stone tiles.
The church has tall, narrow windows called lancets. Its east end, which is usually the front where the altar is, has three main parts. On the south side, there's a small porch with a pointed roof. On the north side, there's a tall tower with three sections. This tower still has its original clock and is topped with a stone spire that rises sharply to a point.
Inside, the main part of the church, called the nave, has five sections. Two of these sections were separated in 1988 to create a kitchen and a toilet. The church used to have an eight-sided font (a basin for baptisms). This original font is now outside in the churchyard. A new font was given to the church in 1878 to remember Ann Wilson.
