History of St John the Baptist's Church

How the Church Began

This church was first built in 1279. It was started by Geoffrey Dethick and Thomas de Wathenowe. Thomas was the Prior of Felley Priory, a religious house in Nottinghamshire. At first, it was a private chapel for Dethick Manor, a large house nearby. This means it was mainly used by the family living in the manor.

Adding the Tower

Most of the church building is from that early time, but the tower was added much later. A man named Sir Antony Babington had the tower built. This happened between 1530 and 1532. You can see the date 1530 carved above the west door. The year 1532 is also shown on a fancy, decorated band around the tower.
