History of the Church
How the Church Started
The church was first built way back in 1279. It was founded by two people: Geoffrey Dethick and Thomas de Wathenowe. Thomas was a leader at Felley Priory, which was a type of monastery.
At first, it wasn't a public church. It was a private chapel for Dethick Manor. A private chapel is like a small church just for the people living in a big house or estate.
Adding the Tower
Most of the church building is from that early time, the 1200s. But the tall tower you see was added much later. It was built by a person named Sir Antony Babington.
He added the tower between 1530 and 1532. You can see the year 1530 carved above the west door. The year 1532 is on a fancy, decorated band around the tower.
