Church History
Starting the Church
In 1794, a priest named Father Thomas Austin Lawson came to Richmond. He was sent to help the local Catholic community. Father Lawson worked there for twenty years. He then returned to his monastery in 1814 and passed away that same year.
After Father Lawson, a group of priests called the Jesuits took over the mission. They sent Father Robert Johnson to Richmond. He served the church community for fifty years. Father Johnson died in 1865. Later, in 1888, a special window was put in the church to remember him.
Building the Church
In 1866, Father William Strickland became the new priest. He noticed that the small chapel used by the community was getting too crowded. More and more people were coming to church. So, Father Strickland asked the famous architect George Goldie to design a bigger church.
The new church was finished and opened in 1868. Building the church and a nearby school cost a lot of money. This left the church with a large debt to pay off.
Church Management
In 1961, the Jesuits handed over the church's management. It was given to the Diocese of Middlesbrough. The last Jesuit priest at the church was Father Edmund Swift. The diocese has been in charge of the church ever since.
