Wycliffe is a small village located in the North East of England. It sits on the south bank of the River Tees. You can find it a short distance east of Barnard Castle. Wycliffe is part of a larger area called the civil parish of Wycliffe with Thorpe.

About Wycliffe

Wycliffe is a quiet place with a rich history. It's known for its peaceful riverside location. The village has a special church that has been there for a very long time.

Where is Wycliffe?

The village is in the North East of England. It is right next to the River Tees. This river forms a natural border in the area. Wycliffe is also close to the town of Barnard Castle.

A Look at History

Wycliffe used to be part of an area called the North Riding of Yorkshire. This was a historic county. However, on April 1, 1974, things changed. Wycliffe, along with other nearby places, moved to County Durham.

This change happened because of a law called the Local Government Act 1972. It meant that for official reasons, like local government and ceremonies, Wycliffe became part of County Durham.

St Mary's Church

One of the most important buildings in Wycliffe is St Mary's Church. It is also known as St Mary Whycliffe-with-Thorpe. This church is very old, built during the medieval period (the Middle Ages).

The church is located right by the river. It sits on a low piece of land. Long ago, this spot was an ancient fording place. A fording place is a shallow part of a river where people and animals could walk across.
