History of St Lawrence’s Church
This church has a long history, dating back to the Middle Ages. Some parts of the building are from the 13th and 15th centuries. This means they are hundreds of years old! The church was partly rebuilt in 1619.
Major Restorations in the 1800s
A big project to restore the church happened between 1868 and 1870. A famous architect named George Edmund Street led this work. The first plan was to rebuild the chancel (the area around the altar) and add a new window. This part cost about £1,337.
However, during the work, they found that the rest of the church also needed a lot of repairs. An extra £1,200 was needed to finish the job. A new company, Dennett and Co, took over. They rebuilt the north aisle, adding five new windows. They also added another aisle to the north side of the chancel. Old galleries inside the church were removed, and the roof was repaired with new lead.
More rebuilding work happened on the south aisle and porch between 1882 and 1883. This part of the project was done by Walker of Sheffield, with Hibbert of Baslow as the main contractor.
Church Community and Parish Status
St Lawrence’s Church is an active part of its community. It is part of a joint parish with two other churches:
- St Anne’s Church, Baslow
- St Hugh’s Church, Foolow
This means they work together to serve their local areas. You can find out more about the church and its activities on its website.
The Church Organ
The church has a special musical instrument called a pipe organ. It was built in 1879 by a company called Brindley and Foster. You can find detailed information about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
