History of St Leonard's Church

The church was built a long, long time ago, in the 1400s. Over the years, the church has been changed and fixed up many times. Around 1751, its wooden tower was replaced with a strong stone one. The church was also repaired in 1873. More changes and additions were made between 1931 and 1932 by an architect named Bateman. After a fire in 1947, the church needed another big repair.

Key Features of the Church Building

The main arch of the church tower has special carvings. These carvings are called "head stops." They show the faces of King George V and Queen Mary. The church building is made from sandstone, which is a type of rock. It has a mix of red and grey colors. Until 1965, the church tower held two bells. A new hall for the church was built in 2005.

The Church Organ

The organ inside St Leonard's Church is also very old. It was built in 1884 by a company called J. W. Walker & Sons Ltd. Later, in 1933, it was changed and improved by Walter James Bird and Son. You can find out more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
