St Leonard's Church is a very old Church of England parish church. It is located in a tiny place called Hartley Mauditt in Hampshire, England. Today, Hartley Mauditt is mostly just this 12th-century church. You can also see the old foundations of a large house and a big pond nearby. The church is named after a saint called St Leonard.

A Look at History: How Old Is This Church?

This small church was built a long time ago, right after the Normans took over England. This happened around the years 1100 to 1125. A family called the de Mauditts probably built it. Over the years, some changes were made to the church. In 1853–4, the church was fixed up, which is called "restored." A small tower for a bell, called a turret, was also added to the west side of the roof.

St Leonard's Church has three main parts: a nave (the main area where people sit), a chancel (the area near the altar), and a small porch on the south side.

Special Features Inside

  • Chancel: This part of the church was built in the 1200s. It holds some old memorials for the Stuart family.
  • Chancel Arch: The arch that connects the nave to the chancel is quite special. It has a rare "horseshoe" shape.
  • Floor Tiles: Look down at the chancel floor! You'll see 34 old tiles with seven different patterns. They are very interesting.
  • South Doorway: The entrance on the south side of the church was built around the late 1100s.
  • Stained Glass: Many of the windows have beautiful stained glass designs. These colorful windows tell stories or show pictures.
  • Font: The church has an eight-sided font. This is a large basin used for baptisms. It was made in the 1400s and shows the style of that time.
