The Church's Story
How the Church Was Built
St Martin's Church has a long and interesting history! It was first built way back in 1683 by a person named Thomas Ekin. When it was first made, it was only about 6 meters (20 feet) long.
Later, in 1821, a Reverend named George Woodley made the church bigger. Then, in 1866, it had to be rebuilt by Augustus Smith because it was badly damaged by lightning.
Special Features of the Church
The church has a bell in its tower that has a cool story. It came from a ship that was wrecked near the islands! Inside, at the west end, there's also a part of the church that was added in the 1900s.
One of the most beautiful parts of the church is the stained glass window at the east end. It shows a picture of Saint Martin and the Beggar. This amazing window was made by a company called Clayton and Bell.
Remembering Brave People
In the churchyard, there are three special memorials. They honor two sailors and a chaplain who died during the First World War. These memorials are looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
The memorials remember:
- Third Mate A. Chichester from the ship "Lux."
- Master W.S. Dobbing from the ship "Olaf."
Both sailors died in 1917.
- Reverend F. Raine, a chaplain who died in December 1918.
