History of St Martin's Church
How the Church Began
St Martin's Church was first built way back in the 1400s. A woman named Joan Eyre had it built. She wanted to celebrate her husband's safe return from a big battle called the Battle of Agincourt.
Changes Over Time
In 1757, a serious fire damaged the church. But don't worry, it was rebuilt quickly! In 1759, a famous architect named James Paine redesigned the main part of the church. He gave it a unique octagonal (eight-sided) shape.
Later, in 1861, the church was updated again. Some parts were changed, like removing a gallery on the west side. Then, in 1880, a new room called a vestry was added on the north side.
Church Community
St Martin's Church is part of a larger group of churches. It shares a parish with a few other churches nearby. These include:
- All Saints' Church, Curbar
- St Giles' Church, Longstone
- The Good Shepherd Church, Wardlow
The Church Organ
Inside St Martin's Church, there is a beautiful pipe organ. It was made by a company called Cousans Sons and Co in 1903. This organ helps create wonderful music for church services. You can find more details about this specific organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
