St Martin's Church is a very old and important church located in Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire, England. It belongs to the Church of England. This church is so special that it's listed as a Grade II* building, which means it's a particularly important building of more than special interest.
History of St Martin's Church
This church was first built way back in the 1400s! A lady named Joan Eyre had it built to celebrate her husband coming home safely from a big battle called the Battle of Agincourt.
In 1757, a serious fire damaged the church. So, in 1759, the main part of the church was rebuilt. An architect named James Paine designed it to be shaped like an octagon, which means it has eight sides.
The church was updated again in 1861. During this time, a gallery on the west side was taken out. Later, in 1880, a new room called a vestry was added on the north side of the church.
