St Martin's Church is a special old church located on the island of St Martin's in the Isles of Scilly, UK. It's part of the Church of England and is considered a "Grade II listed" building. This means it's an important historical place that is protected.

A Look Back in Time

The church was first built way back in 1683. A person named Thomas Ekin, who worked for the Godolphin family, oversaw its construction. When it was first built, the church was quite small, only about 6 meters (20 feet) long.

In 1821, a Reverend George Woodley made it bigger. Later, in 1866, Augustus Smith rebuilt it after a lightning strike caused a lot of damage. The bell you see in the church's tower has an interesting story. It came from a ship that crashed near the islands a long time ago. In the 1900s, another part was added to the west side of the church.

Beautiful Stained Glass

At the east end of the church, there's a beautiful stained glass window. It shows a picture of Saint Martin and the Beggar. This window was made by a company called Clayton and Bell.

Remembering Heroes

In the churchyard, there are three special memorials from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. These memorials mark the burial places of two sailors and a chaplain. They all died during the First World War.

The memorials remember Third Mate A. Chichester and Master W.S. Dobbing, both from the Merchant Navy, who died in 1917. They also remember Reverend F. Raine, a chaplain in the Army, who died in December 1918.

Church Family

St Martin's Church is part of a larger group of churches called the United Benefice of the Isles of Scilly parishes. This means it works together with other churches on the islands.
