History of St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church was one of three churches built in Sheffield around 1818. These churches were part of a plan to build many new churches across England. St Mary's is the only one of these three churches still used for services today.
Building the Church
The famous architect Joseph Potter designed the church. It cost about £13,927 to build. A special group called the Church Building Commission gave money for the project. The first stone was laid on October 12, 1826. A lady called the Countess of Surrey helped with this important start. The church was officially opened on July 21, 1830.
Church Design and Changes
The church is built in a style called Perpendicular Gothic. This means it has tall, straight lines and large windows. It also has a very tall tower, which is about 140 feet (43 meters) high.
During World War II, the church was damaged by bombs. This happened during the "Sheffield Blitz", which was when German planes bombed Sheffield. After the war, the church was repaired. Part of the building continued to be used as a church. The other part became a community center for local people.
Past Events at the Church
In 1839, a group called the Chartists tried to set fire to St Mary's. The Chartists were a group of people who wanted more rights for working-class people. They were suspicious of the new, large churches. Luckily, their attempt to burn the church was not successful.
Today, St Mary's Church is recognized as a very important building. It is listed as a grade II* listed building. This means it has special historical or architectural importance.
St Mary's Church Today
In the year 2000, the inside of the church was updated. The church and the community center were joined together. Now, the whole space can be used for both church services and community events. It is also used to host meetings and other gatherings.
The church has a strong connection with Sheffield United F.C., a local football team. Their stadium is very close to the church. When the church was being updated in 2000, church services were even held at the football club!
