St Mary's Church is a historic church located in the village of Downe, which is now part of Bromley in London. It's a Church of England parish church, meaning it serves the local community of Downe. This beautiful building is very old, dating all the way back to the 13th century. It's so important that it's officially recognized as a Grade II* listed building. The church is named after either St Mary the Virgin or St Mary Magdalene. Inside, the oldest stained glass window shows Christ as the Good Shepherd. This window was created by an artist named Daniel Bell.

The Darwin Family's Connection to St Mary's

The Church of St Mary has a special link to the famous scientist Charles Darwin. He lived at Down House, a home very close to the church, from 1842 until he passed away in 1882.

Charles Darwin's Role in the Church

Charles Darwin was quite involved in the church's activities in Downe. He helped with parish work for many years. However, after about 1849, he would often go for a walk on Sundays. His family would still attend the church service. Charles's wife, Emma Darwin, had different religious beliefs. Because of this, the family would turn away during a specific part of the Anglican service.

Darwin Family Burials at St Mary's

Many members of the Darwin family are buried in the churchyard of St Mary's. This includes Charles's brother, Erasmus Alvey Darwin, who died in 1881. Charles's wife, Emma Darwin, was buried there in 1896. Several of Charles and Emma's children also rest in the churchyard. These include Mary Eleanor Darwin, Charlie, Elizabeth, and Henrietta. Later, their grandson Bernard Darwin and his wife Elinor Monsell were also buried there. Charles Darwin himself had wanted to be buried at St Mary's. However, he was instead buried in the famous Westminster Abbey in London. Emma Darwin's sister, Elizabeth Wedgwood, and Charles and Emma's aunt, Sarah Wedgwood, are also buried together in the churchyard.
