The Story of St Mary's Church
Building the Church
The land for St Mary's Church was bought in 1858 by a local landowner named Sir John Sutton. However, he passed away before any building work could start. More than 30 years later, in 1880, the construction finally began.
Most of the money for the church came from Thomas Young, who lived at Kingerby Hall. He also helped pay for several other churches in Lincolnshire. The church was designed by Matthew Ellison Hadfield and his son, Charles Hadfield. They were also the architects for big cathedrals in Salford and Sheffield.
The original plan was to build a church twice as big! But that would have cost too much money. So, a smaller, but still beautiful, church was built instead. The church officially opened on August 19, 1883. The Bishop of Nottingham, Edward Bagshawe, was there for the opening.
Inside the church, there is a special altar called the "sacred heart altar." It was designed by a company called Pugin & Pugin. This altar was given to the church by Georgina Fraser. Her father was George Heneage, and her brother was Baron Heneage. The church also has some lovely stained-glass windows. These were made by a studio called Hardman & Co..
Changes Over Time
In 1908, beautiful paintings were added to the walls of the sanctuary area of the church. These paintings were created by the studio of Nathaniel Westlake. More paintings were added in the 1930s. One interesting painting was a dado frieze that showed fish. It went all around the inside walls of the church.
However, in the 1960s, these wall paintings were covered up with paint. Later, in 1979, the church was changed again. A new altar and a new lectern (a stand for reading) were put in. In 1983, a new entrance area, called a narthex, was built at the back of the church.
In the 2000s, people worked hard to uncover the old wall paintings. They also fixed up the church's organ, which was from the 1920s.
