A Look Inside the Church

The Church of Saint Mary has a long history. Some parts, like pieces of the north door and tower, are from the Norman period. This means they are very old, possibly from the 11th or 12th century! Most of the church you see today was built in the 14th century. For example, the north chapel was finished in 1328.

The church is made from local stone. It also uses special Hamstone for its decorations. The church tower has six bells. The oldest bell is from the 1400s, which is over 500 years old!

Inside Features

When you go inside the church, you can see many old items. The pulpit and the altar table are from the 1600s. There is also an eight-sided font from the 1500s. A font is a basin used for baptisms.

You can also find several old statues inside. One is of Sir Richard Gyvernay. He built the chantry chapel and passed away in 1329. Below his statue is a smaller female figure. There is also a double monument of a man and a woman. People believe these are Henry and Matilda Power, and their statues are from the 1340s.

Famous Connections

The Church of Saint Mary has a connection to a very famous person in history: Thomas Wolsey. He was the church's rector, which is like its main priest, from 1500 to 1509. After his time in Limington, Thomas Wolsey became a powerful cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. He was a very important figure in England's history.
