About St Mary's Church
A Look at Its History
St Mary's Church is really old, first built way back in the 1200s! That's over 800 years ago. Over time, parts of the church have been fixed up and made new again. For example, a famous architect named Scott helped restore it in 1860. Later, in 1883, the tall, pointy part of the church, called the spire, was repaired. The chancel, which is the area near the altar, was also restored in 1890.
St Mary's Church is part of a group of churches that work together. These include:
- St Aidan's Church, Caythorpe
- St John the Baptist's Church, Gunthorpe
Special Memorials
Inside the church, you can find old memorials that remember people from the past. These include:
- A stone figure of Sir John de Lowdham from 1318. He is shown lying down with his legs crossed, wearing chain mail armor.
- Slate tablets for Charles Broughton.
- A memorial on the east wall for Petri Broughton, from 1695.
The Church Organ
St Mary's Church has a pipe organ, which is a musical instrument that makes sound using air through pipes. This organ has two keyboards and 12 different sounds, called stops. It was made by Charles Lloyd. In 1963, it was rebuilt by a company called Cousins of Lincoln. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
