History of the Church
This church is incredibly old! It was first built way back in the 13th century. Imagine all the history it has seen.
Restoration Work
Over the years, the church has been carefully looked after. In 1860, a famous architect named Scott helped to restore it. To "restore" something means to repair it and bring it back to its original good condition. The church's tall, pointy roof, called a spire, was fixed in 1883. Later, in 1890, the chancel (the part of the church near the altar) was also restored.
St Mary's Church is part of a "joint parish." This means it works together with other churches in the area. These churches are:
- St Aidan's Church, Caythorpe
- St John the Baptist's Church, Gunthorpe
Special Memorials
Inside St Mary's Church, you can find some interesting memorials. These are like special plaques or statues that remember people from the past.
Notable Memorials
- Sir John de Lowdham: There is a memorial for Sir John de Lowdham from 1318. It shows a statue of him lying down with his legs crossed. He is wearing chain mail, which was a type of armor.
- Charles Broughton: You can also see slate tablets that remember Charles Broughton.
- Petri Broughton: On the east wall, there is a memorial for Petri Broughton from 1695.
The Church Organ
St Mary's Church has a musical instrument called a pipe organ. It's a smaller organ with two keyboards and 12 "stops" (which change the sound).
Organ History
The organ was built by a person named Charles Lloyd. In 1963, it was rebuilt by a company called Cousins of Lincoln. This means they took it apart and put it back together, making it work like new. If you are interested in organs, you can find more details about this one on the National Pipe Organ Register.
