A Look at Lowdham's History
How Lowdham Got Its Name
The name Lowdham probably comes from an old English name, "Hluda." It means "Hluda's homestead" or "Hluda's village." Some people also think the name might have come from Danish words, like "Ludham" or "Ludholme."
Ancient Times and Knights
Long ago, in the Middle Ages, a knight named Sir John de Loudham lived here. He passed away in 1318. You can see a special stone slab and a statue of him in St Mary's Church, Lowdham. The statue shows a dog at his feet. This often meant the knight was a brave warrior, loyal like a dog to its master.
Churches and Chapels
St Mary's Church, Lowdham is very old, built before the 1300s. It stands to the west of the main bypass road. Later, in the 1800s, two Methodist chapels were built in Lowdham. One, called Top Chapel, closed in 1986. The other, called Bottom Chapel, is still used today as an Independent Methodist church.
The Knitting Industry
In the 1800s, Lowdham was known for its frame knitting industry. This meant people made knitted items, like stockings, using special machines called stocking frames. In 1844, there were 94 of these machines working in the village! Today, there isn't much left to show how important this industry once was.
Famous People from Lowdham
Lowdham has been home to some interesting people throughout history:
- Sir John de Loudham (died 1318): A landowner who lived a long time ago. His memory is kept alive in St Mary's Church, Lowdham.
- George Wilkins (1785–1865): He was a vicar (a type of church leader) in Lowdham for many years. He later became an important church leader in Nottingham and helped build and fix many churches.
- Cornelius Brown (1852–1907): Born in Lowdham, he became a local historian. This means he studied and wrote about the history of the area. He was also a newspaper editor.
- Harold Cottam (1891–1984): He was a wireless operator on a ship called the RMS Carpathia. He famously received the distress call from the RMS Titanic when it was sinking. His quick actions helped the Carpathia rescue many survivors. There's a blue plaque on The Old Ship Inn to remember him.
- Richard Whitehead (born 1976): A Paralympic sprinter who won medals for Great Britain. He is honored with a gold-painted post box outside the post office in Lowdham.
