About St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church is a busy place in Maidenhead. It is part of the Church of England, which is the main Christian church in England. The church welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds. Its main aim is to help people learn about Jesus and share his message with others.
Church Buildings
The St Mary's Church site has several important buildings. These include the main church building, church halls for activities, and a building called the 'Old Vic'. The 'Old Vic' used to be where the vicar lived from 1950 to 1992. There is also a small chapel and a garden at the 'Old Vic'.
History of the Church Building
The current St Mary's Church building is actually the fourth one built on this site. The church has been rebuilt three times over the years. The newest church building was finished in 1965.
A cool fact about the church is its spire. It is made from a strong material called fibreglass. When it was built, a large crane was needed to lift the spire into place! The church also had a big update, called a refurbishment, between 2016 and 2018.
Who Works at the Church
The main leader of St Mary's Church is called the vicar. The current vicar is Revd Jon Drake. He took over after the previous vicar, Revd Will Stileman, moved to another church.
The church also has other important staff members. These include two associate ministers, Revd Ian Miller and Revd Adam Curtis. Besides the clergy (ministers), there are other staff who help with church activities and office work.
Church Leadership
St Mary's Church has a special arrangement for its leadership. It receives guidance from a specific bishop, currently Rob Munro. This is part of a system called "alternative episcopal oversight." It means the church has chosen to be guided by this bishop.
