History of St Mary's Church
How Old is the Church?
This church is super old! It was first built way back in the 1100s, which is known as the 12th century. Imagine all the history it has seen!
Restoration Work
Over the years, parts of the church have needed repairs. Around 1895, the roof over the chancel (the area near the altar) was fixed up. Later, in 1925, the roof over the nave (the main part where people sit) also needed work. It had some tiny bugs called Deathwatch beetle that were damaging the wood. Luckily, it was restored and made strong again!
Royal Coat of Arms
Inside the church, you can see a special decoration called the royal coat of arms. This one dates all the way back to 1720. It is a symbol of the British royal family.

It also remembers his wife, Jane, who passed away in 1829. Jane was the oldest daughter of Edward Lister from Coverham Abbey.
