St Mary's Church, Undy, is a historic church located in the small village of Undy in Monmouthshire, Wales. This old building has been a part of the community for many centuries. It is a place where people gather for worship and to learn about its long history.

A Look Back in Time

St Mary's Church was first built around the 1100s. Imagine how long ago that was! The pointed part of the church, called the chancel, was added about 100 years later. It was made even longer at some point, but we don't know exactly when.

Changes Over the Years

In 1880, the church had a big makeover. A famous architect named John Prichard helped with this work. During this time, a window on the north side of the church was added. Many other windows are much older than this one.

An interesting change happened to the church's tower. A small tower in the middle was taken down. In its place, a larger bell turret was built. This is where the church's bell is located.

You can even see some history carved into the church's porch. The names of the churchwardens from 1790 are still there! Churchwardens are people who help manage the church's property and affairs.

More recently, in 2001, the church had another restoration. This helped keep the old building in good condition for future generations.

How the Church is Organized

St Mary's Church is part of a larger group called the Rectorial Benefice of Magor. This group helps manage several churches in the area. It is also part of the Netherwent deanery, which is a local church district. The church belongs to the Church in Wales denomination.

What is a Listed Building?

Since 1955, St Mary's Church has been a Grade II listed building. This means it is a special building that is important to the history and architecture of Wales. Being "listed" helps protect the church. It ensures that any changes made to it are carefully planned to keep its historic character.
