History of St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church is one of three churches built in Sheffield a long time ago, around the 1820s. These churches were constructed thanks to a special law called the Church Building Act 1818. This law helped build new churches across England. Out of the three churches built in Sheffield under this act, St Mary's is the only one still used as a church today.
Building the Church
The church was designed by an architect named Joseph Potter. Building it cost about £13,927. A grant of £13,941 was given to help cover these costs. The first stone was laid on October 12, 1826, by the Countess of Surrey. The church was officially opened and ready for use on July 21, 1830.
Architectural Style and Changes
St Mary's Church is built in a style called Perpendicular Gothic. This style is known for its tall, slender features and large windows. The church has a tower that stands about 140 feet (43 meters) tall.
During World War II, the church was damaged by bombs during the "Sheffield Blitz". After the war, when it was repaired, the building was divided. Part of it continued to be used as a church, while the rest became a community center. This allowed the building to serve more people in different ways.
In 1839, a group called the Chartists tried to set fire to St Mary's. They were suspicious of the new, large Anglican churches. Luckily, their attempt was not successful.
Today, St Mary's Church is recognized as a very important historical building. It is listed in the National Heritage List for England as a grade II* listed building. This means it's a building of special interest and importance.
St Mary's Today
In the year 2000, the church underwent a big renovation inside. This project made the church and the community center into one combined space. This flexible space can now be used for church services, community events, and even conferences.
The church has a strong connection with Sheffield United F.C., a local football club. Their stadium is located right on Bramall Lane, close to the church. In fact, during the 2000 renovation, church services were held at the football club!
